Devils Burdens relay 31st Jan 04
The running of this years race was in doubt up until the last minute due to the wintry conditions, heavy falling snow and low cloud. Despite this a record 55 teams set off up E. Lomond with a blizzard at their backs.
After 40 mins the first teams started arriving at Holl reservoir and despite having almost a minutes advantage over the A team at the first two checkpoints Ron and Pete had been pulled back by Jonny and Dave, and came in together only a couple of mins. down on the lead teams.
Simon and I set off, again with the snow on our backs (unusual to have a following wind on this leg). The drop off West Craig to Scotlandwell was very slippy,3-4" of snow, and I spent most of it on my backside . Simon ran well and had taken 2 mins. out of me by the finish.
Leg 3 was run into the wind and snow and both our pairs, Ian and Stuart and Robin and John benefited from finding a good line in the tough conditions, only 1 mins. separating them at the end of the leg. With the leading teams inc. Carnethy and Shettleston both getting lost our A team dropped (literately) off W.Lomond in 3rd place, followed closely( 5/6th?) by the vets.
Alastair quickly caught up to 2nd and passed him but there was just to much to do to catch Lothian.Viv also ran well for the vets but couldnt hold off the fast finishing Shetts. vet so we finished 8th overall, 3rd vet team.
All in all a very good result for both teams-well done and thanks for turning out.
